As we get ready to hang the New Lights Exhibition at Swinton Park, our fourth artist in the spotlight is James Naughton. James was born in Bolton and is one of the UK’s leading contemporary landscape painters, exhibiting extensively in London and across the country. James pursued his childhood love of art to achieve a first class honours degree from Leeds Metropolitan University in 1994. Since then, he has enjoyed an extraordinary career, becoming one of Britain’s most accomplished and sought after landscape painters.

It is often said that a James Naughton painting evokes an emotional experience, sometimes even a spiritual one, but he prefers not to attach definitive meanings to his work preferring his painting to speak for itself and allowing the individual viewer his or her own personal dialogue with the image. He currently has a major, large scale solo exhibition at Bolton Museum and Art Gallery showing his work from a recent journey in the USA, in which he followed in the footsteps of one of his artistic heroes, Thomas Moran.
