Greg previously worked as a Geography teacher in a large secondary school in Cumbria. Greg has sold much of his work at craft fairs in the North of England and currently has work at various galleries. What started as a hobby turned into an obsession, so he decided to quit his job and work fulltime as a woodturner.
In 2023 Greg was invited to be part of the Collect Open Exhibition at the Crafts Council Collect Art Fair where he was awarded the Director’s Choice award. Greg was also selected to exhibit at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition and the Worshipful Company of Turners Masters invitation event. Greg was a finalist in this year’s Wood Awards. Greg is a member of the Register of Professional Turners. His work has featured in the Woodturning Magazine Issue 384, Homes and Antiques 2023 and Country Living’s Modern Rustic magazine issue 25.
Greg works hard to collect wood from local tree surgeons that would have been used as firewood. The wood is then ‘turned green’, to a thickness of 2mm and allowed to dry. When dry the wood is sandblasted. This has the effect of removing the soft spring growth leaving a lace like effect. This can only be done with oak, which has medullary rays which go across the growth rings. This involves combining both wood turning and sculpting. What is produced, in Greg’s view, is fine art created by nature, and revealed by a craftsman.
