Scarborough based fabric artist Wendy Galloway has been honing her skills in fabric sculpture for longer than she cares to admit, her practice revolves around using recycled fabrics wherever possible and she will wait until the perfect piece of fabric is found to finish off some sculptures. She isn’t after a perfect finished sculpture or wall hanging, instead she tries to achieve a loose sketchiness to her work this is often accomplished by chaotic stitching or an anatomically incorrect figure.
She likes to take her inspiration from 18th and 19th century pottery, colonial art, folk art, myths and legends, cartoons and poetry, in fact the past plays a big part in the creations she makes. Wendy tries to capture an imagined nostalgia, something similar but not quite right, weaving a new story on a traditional theme.
Light hearted, nostalgic and uncomplicated is what she strives for.
