Art, for me was an escape from the intense boredom of my grammar school education where misogyny and mediocrity flourished. I was one of the lucky ones , my education in the arts was funded. BA (hons) Fine Art led to an MA in Print textiles at MMU where I collaborated with the Royal Northern Ballet Theatre designing costumes and set for a new ballet.
I’d describe myself now as a visual artist working with print, drawing, shadow and form.
My work is non representational, using layered forms and sometimes intensively worked surfaces.
This recent series of work -The Shipping Forecast- in which tensions arise between shapes, the interplay of hue and tone and the spaces left between, was printed at the Cambridge Print Studio. Some of the eighteen works are still and spare, others restless and noisy, very much like the eponymous forecast itself.
Working from my studio in Kent I maintain strong links with France where I lived , worked and brought up my children. I was a designer in the French textile industry and HE tutor.
My art practice has developed over the last ten years and I’ve learnt and subverted various printmaking techniques. I was a member of Greenwich Printmakers, The Printmakers Council and various other organisations and societies. I exhibited nationally and internationally, entered numerous Open Calls and benefitted from a travel bursary (A-N newsletter), and time spent as an artist in residence in Sweden. I’m rebuilding my practice following a year of absence and taking the time to reflect, distill and unlearn as well as learn from the digital, fast moving world we inhabit.
