NEW LIGHT PRIZE EXHIBITION 2020-21
Artists still have time to enter for the New Light Prize Exhibition, which has been described as the ‘most talked about Prize Exhibition in the North’ with the deadline being the 31 May.
This is a fabulous opportunity for contemporary Northern artists to be part of a high-profile touring Prize Exhibition which boasts some of the region’s largest art awards, including a generous main prize of £10,000.
“Being part of the New Light Prize Exhibition was a great opportunity to access a really wide and diverse audience.” Comments artist Debbie Loane, who was selected for a previous New Light Prize Exhibition, she adds:
“The touring element of the exhibition enabled me to show my work in some really fantastic venues which just wouldn’t have been achievable on a solo basis. I was really pleased that I made new connections with buyers and curators both in the publicly funded and commercial sector. From an artist’s perspective it was an honour to show in the company of so many really talented artists with a northern connection, proving that it doesn’t always have to go on in London.”
Shortlisted artists will feature in the New Light Prize Exhibition, which will tour three of the North’s most prestigious venues from the autumn: the Scarborough Art Gallery; Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, Carlisle and The Biscuit Factory, Newcastle.
In addition, in 2021 all selected artists will also be given the opportunity to showcase their work in the cultural heart of London, with an exhibition at the Bankside Gallery. With the previous exhibition attracting over 26,000 visitors this is a fabulous opportunity for visual artists.
Contemporary artists born, based or who have studied in the North of England: Cumbria, Durham, Lancashire, Northumberland and Yorkshire, should apply online at www.newlight-art.org.uk before the deadline of 31 May 2020. This year’s awards include a £10,000 Valeria Sykes Prize, the Saul Hay Emerging Artist Award, a Patron’s Choice Award of £2,500 and The Zillah Bell Printmakers’ Prize amongst others.
This is a great chance for artists to attract the interest of the art world. This 5th biennial New Light Prize Exhibition has attracted an impressive line-up of judges: contemporary printmaker and Royal Academician Anne Desmet; renowned art critic, writer and editor of the RA Magazine, Sam Phillips; Curator of Art at Huddersfield Art Gallery, Grant Scanlan and founder of the New Light Prize Exhibition, Annette Petchey.
“True to its name, New Light is a revelation. Nearly all of the artists here were new to me and there were several I was astonished – and rather ashamed – not to have come across. I hope this exposure will make them more visible in the future. The sheer variety of work, at all levels, was heartening – it bolstered my faith in the vigour of British painting.” Laura Gascoigne – Art Reviewer and previous New Light Judge
The entry process is all online and full details are at www.newlight-art.org.uk. The deadline for entries is 5pm on 31 May, artists must be over 18 years of age.
