The Retreat Clinic in York is enjoying the loan of several contemporary artworks from the New Light Collection.
Founder, William Tuke, is regarded as being a revolutionary in the care of mental health. Horrified by the treatment of patients in what were then called ‘lunatic asylums,’ he designed The Retreat to be both respectful and dignified in the treatment of patients. He favoured the therapeutic acts of gardening and creating art, believing this to be hugely beneficial.
It seems very fitting that the New Light Collection is gracing the walls of his original building for visitors and staff to enjoy.
