Exciting opportunity for Cumbrian Artists – £10k Art prize & touring exhibition
Cumbrian artists are encouraged to enter for the New Light Prize Exhibition before the deadline of the 31 May 2020. This is an exciting opportunity for northern artists to win a £10k art prize and take part in a high profile touring exhibition.

The exhibition will tour three of the North’s most prestigious venues: these include Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, Carlisle; Scarborough Art Gallery and The Biscuit Factory, Newcastle as well as an exhibition in the cultural heart of London, at the Bankside Gallery.

Alan Stones – Father and son – shortlisted for the New Light Prize Exhibition 2017/18
Cumbrian artists selected for previous New Light Prize Exhibitions include Penrith based Alan Stones, Carlisle based Mark Gibbs and Brampton based Rachel Gibson, an acrylic artist who was also shortlisted for the Cumbrian Artist of the Year Award in 2017.

Mark Gibbs comments: “I was delighted to have 2 sculptures accepted into the 2017-18 New Lights Exhibition; the experience was highly beneficial and one of the highlights of my career. Although I’ve exhibited quite widely, I consider myself an emerging artist, and as such it was wonderful to have this prestigious showcase- even better- the tour meant four great venues. Inclusion gave my work a new level of exposure to new audiences and has resulted in a new gallery relationship. I met some amazing fellow artists, had fascinating conversations and new networking opportunities. All of this in is incredibly valuable. I think it is fair to say the UK Art scene is London-centric so bravo for championing work form the North.I’m certainly going to apply for the upcoming exhibition… fingers crossed!”

This is a great chance for artists to attract the interest of the art world. This 5th biennial New Light Prize Exhibition has attracted an impressive line-up of judges: contemporary printmaker and Royal Academician Anne Desmet; renowned art critic, writer and editor of the RA Magazine, Sam Phillips; Curator of Art at Huddersfield Art Gallery, Grant Scanlan and founder of the New Light Prize Exhibition, Annette Petchey.
Open to artists born, based or who have studied in the North of England: Cumbria, Durham, Lancashire, Northumberland and Yorkshire.This year’s awards include a £10,000 Valeria Sykes Prize, the Saul Hay Emerging Artist Award, a Patron’s Choice Award of £2,500 and The Zillah Bell Printmakers’ Prize amongst others.
