Lucy McElroy

Agnes in Her Wonderland

Description

Pastel & charcoal on paper
77cm x 60cm

Lucy was an Art teacher for many years before dedicating her time to her portrait practice. She now mostly works to commission; creating personal and emotional treasures for her clients. Love and connection is at the heart of her practice, she takes real care to produce a true likeness in each portrait and is frequently told that she also captures something deeper of the personality or spirit.

Lucy enjoys drawing and painting people of all ages but she is particularly known for her portraits of children, often in motion or engaged in play, lost in their own worlds. She uses her materials to evoke a dreamlike, ephemeral quality reflecting the transient beauty of life.

‘I usually work from my own photographs but this piece was inspired by a photo taken by Gemma Cowburn of her daughter Agnes inspecting a particularly hairy caterpillar. I felt it perfectly illustrated the magic and curiosity of childhood. I hope that I have created a timeless image capturing this beautiful, fleeting moment.’
