Lois Wallace

Blackened Gold II

Description

Oil on canvas
40cm x 50cm

Lois Wallace was born in Manchester and studied at Coventry Polytechnic and The Slade School of Art, followed by a Fellowship at Cheltenham School of Art. She was Senior Lecturer in Fine Art and Illustration at Birmingham City University until 2017. Her work has been exhibited extensively in the UK and Europe. She won a finalist prize in the Columbia Threadneedle competition in 2018 and has won numerous awards in competitions and scholarships. Her work is held in collections in Europe, Miami, New Zealand and the UK.

‘In essence my paintings explore the significance of protection and security when met with different forms of disintegration, uncertainty and vulnerability. These imagined places depict fragility and disquiet through the tonality of light and atmosphere. The painted surface is built up in layers of transparent gradations of colour to create light, atmosphere and a sense of illumination from within. The narrative is recognisable and familiar but at the same time unsettling and reflects upon our current times in a poignant way.’
