He studied Fine Art Painting and Printmaking at Leicester Polytechnic and has worked for 30 years in the design and print industry. I remember receiving vouchers for an art prize at school and buying an illustrated bird book by Basil Ede, which contained a marvellous illustration of a Jay eating acorns. Back then Jays seemed rare as hen’s teeth and it was only when I moved to Yorkshire, 20 odd years later, that I started to notice them flit across the tree tops on my commute into work.
I recorded my painting’s progress on social media, and had to laugh when a relative expressed how much she loved my Bullfinch, despite the prominence of the lower case j set in Garamond. The latin for Jay is Garrulus Glandarius, and the painting is a play on both bird and type classification, entitled Garrulus Garamond (lower case j).
