Alan is a professional freelance artist based in Leeds. He trained at Eastbourne and Goldsmith’s College of Art during the eighties after which he moved up north to Leeds and immediately became a member and studio holder at Leeds Art Space Society.
During the time since then he has worked across various artforms including painting, murals, sculpture set design and mosaics. Many of these projects took place in the public realm and his work can be seen in various urban and rural locations around the north of England.
Alan has exhibited his paintings widely throughout the region with most of his recent exhibitions taking place in Gallery 16, a very successful occasional space that can be found in his home in Leeds.
Alan says: ‘Primarily, as a painter I work with my own experience of the world. I paint the people that I know and the places that I walk through, and develop my paintings from a mix of direct observation, photos, memory and imagination. I like to embellish a subject with my own feelings towards it and experiment with different possibilities during the creation of a painting, constantly painting over and reassessing the composition until a final solution is reached.’
