Handwoven tapestry, hand-dyed weft, cotton warp
175cm x 169cm
I weave small moments, fragile memories, and unconfronted experiences into large-scale handwoven, contemporary tapestries on an upright loom. I use traditional iconography and a personal vocabulary of symbolism to build my narratives. My work uses the skills of medieval weavers, when the medium was and an art form in its own right, rather than as later, an imitator of others. My work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, in Artapestry6, a triennial that showcases the best contemporary tapestry weaving in Europe and I have been shortlisted for the Cordis Prize, a prize for contemporary tapestry. I studied medieval tapestries in collections across Europe and in the States as a Churchill Fellow.
In 2022 I had a solo exhibition at Ripon Cathedral and am currently making work for the next. It can take 1000-2000 hours to weave my tapestries and it is why the form was prized historically.
