I am a figurative, expressionist painter from Yorkshire who focuses on the human figure or face to highlight some of the essentials of human existence. Main interests include the connections between humans and their environment, individual psychological states, the role of fate and the power of story. This obsession with story may emanate from my doctorate in Literature and one of the ‘chapters’ in my life is as an academic. Other ‘chapters’ include working in local television news, running a national animal art organisation, working as a guide in a stately home and, most importantly, being a mum!
My work is characterised by textures, whether that be physical, such as impasto or layers of cold wax, or optical. This piece is part of a series utilising this flat, optical texture, achieved by numerous layers of jewel-like, transparent, fluid acrylics. An abstract underpainting is created, from which figures and narratives are suggested, mirroring the chaos of existence from which we craft our lives and societies.
