‘Modest in scale and ambition, ‘Twilight’ isn’t concerned with making an artistic statement but with observing the effect of light. Dusk has fascinated British artists from Atkinson Grimshaw to George Clasuen, and with its sensitive balance of tone and colour this poetic little painting perfectly captures the dreamlike quality of twilight, caught on the threshold between day and night’

‘Winning a New Light Bursary has given me renewed confidence in my recent decision to leave my day job and commit fully to my art practice. Being selected as a prizewinner by Laura Gascoigne—a writer and critic I greatly admire—is a real honour. I’m proud of this recognition and to be represented as a Northern artist. The bursary will enable me to invest in some new specialised cadmium and cobalt pigments, helping me develop a new body of work over the coming year.’

My artwork explores personal memories within the traditional genres of landscape, figure, and still life painting. I have been working as an artist for over 30 years and am fascinated by pigments and historic painting materials, often making my own paint. I am a Visiting Professor at Wrexham University, having taught fine art for over 20 years, and I was elected a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy in 2018. I work from my garden studio in Chester and hold a PhD from the University of Wales, a Postgraduate Diploma in Painting (MA) from the Royal Academy Schools, and a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Nottingham Trent University.
