July 18, 2025 1:15 pm - 3:45 pm The 1912 Mill, Sunny Bank Mills, Farsley, Leeds LS28 5UJ

Portraits using charcoal & sandpaper

In the morning, Mick will demonstrate drawing a portrait from life in charcoal. Showcasing an experimental technique, peculiar to Mick, that employs a novel use for sandpaper.

Demonstration: 10.30am – 12.30pm

In the afternoon workshop, Mick will initially lead participants through a number of exercises that (re)introduce time-honoured techniques to achieve correct proportion, and capture the likeness of the sitter. Participants will then put those techniques into practice, as they tackle drawing a portrait in charcoal, (with or without sandpaper)!

Workshop: 1.15pm – 3.45pm

(Maximum 16 people. Booking is essential)

What to bring:

  • Several sheets of A3 or A2 cartridge paper.
  • A drawing board.
  • Vine or willow charcoal.
  • Putty rubber.

OR

Materials can be provided. An optional contribution of £3 per person to cover costs would be welcome. Please advise when booking.
